OTHER SITE NEWS
RADC - Rome Air Development Center, Griffiss AFB, N. Y., (RADC)
has installed a DEC-2040 running TOPS-20AN operating system. This
machine will be host address 3/18. RADC-XPER will be moved to
1/18 replacing ROCHESTER. The DEC-2040 is a SERVER and will be
used primarily for National Software Works (NSW) Project research.
SRI-ARC - Beginning January 78 most of the Augmentation Research
Center (SRI-ARC) group will become a division of Tymshare, Inc.
and will no longer be formally affiliated with SRI-International
(although for a few months they will still be on the SRI premises
with the same addresses and online mailboxes). At Tymshare the
group will be marketing the oNLine System (NLS), and continuing
the work begun at SRI by Doug Engelbart, et al. For particulars,
contact Jim Norton (NORTON@OFFICE-1).
NIC - The NIC, which was formerly a part of the Augmentation
Research Center (SRI-ARC), will remain at SRI and be associated
with the Telecommunication Sciences Center, same address, mailbox,
and phone.
OFFICE-1 is back on the ARPANET (0/43). The facility will now be
managed by Tymshare for DARCOM.
DTI - Several of the people formerly associated with the Univ. of
Illinois, Center for Advanced Computation, have formed a new
company called Digital Technology, Inc., 302 East John St.,
Champaign, Ill. 61820, (217) 384-8500. The group is headed by
Pete Alsberg. The IMP that was formerly at the Univ. of Illinois
will be moved to DTI (sponsored by DCA) along with the PDP-11/70
computer formerly known as ILL-CAC. The new host will be called
DTI and will have host address 1/12. DTI will accept mail
addressed to ILL-NTS until that machine can be relocated. (See
ILLINOIS below).
ILLINOIS - ILL-CAC will be moved to DTI (as stated above) along
with the Illinois IMP. ILL-NTS will be disconnected temporarily
but will probably become a VDH to the Wright-Patterson AFB IMP by
the end of January. The network UNIX system and all
computer-related activities have been administratively moved from
the Center for Advanced Computation (CAC) to the Computing
Services Office. Jody Kravitz (jody@ill-nts) is responsible for
the new activity. CAC, a research arm of the graduate school,
will continue with its network research activities.
NPG - The Monterey Naval Postgraduate School (NPG) will be coming
onto the network sometime in the near future. At that time the
FNWC IMP will be replaced by a TIP and FNWC will be a VDH to the
TIP.
TIP PHONES - Many of the TIP phone numbers will now be changed
every 6 months. The NIC does NOT maintain a list of TIP phone
numbers and is not permitted to give out the ones with which it is
familiar. If your users need the number for a particular TIP,
have them contact the Liaison for that TIP. The owners of the
TIPs reserve the right to release the numbers as they see fit.

PROTOCOL HANDBOOK - The Protocol Handbook will (hopefully) go to
press next week. The new edition should be a much more useful
reference book than past editions. Thanks to Jon Postel and Ken
Harrenstien for their work in identifying, writing, and revising much
of the material. Thanks also to Bob Braden, Mark Crispin, John Day,
Dave Crocker, Danny Cohen, Alex McKenzie, and Paul Santos. The
CAHCOM and HEADER-PEOPLE groups also went into overdrive to finish
the Mail Standard so it could be included. One copy of the Protocol
Handbook will be sent to each Liaison for site use.
NIC QUESTIONNAIRE - We have received more than 50 responses to the
NIC Questionnaire. If you did not fill out the questionnaire and
have a little more time to do so now that the holidays are over, we
would still like to receive your input. We will also accept any
'free-form' comments you would like to send. DCA has extended the
time period for replying until the 31st of January to accomodate
those who may still want to respond. The questionnaire can be FTPd
as <NETINFO>NIC-QUESTIONNAIRE.TXT using the 'anonymous' login
convention, or we will send you hardcopies on request.
AD NUMBER FOR ARPANET DIRECTORY - The Arpanet Directory has been
deposited at the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). Its
order number is AD A046948, and it may be purchased by the general
public.

Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory is pleased to announce a new
server FTP answering on socket 3. Previously, we have had an
unsupported server running at odd intervals, but the new program
will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The following
is a brief collection of notes on the new program:
1) All commands other than HELP and MAIL require the
user to have identified himself via the USER, ACCT
and PASS commands. LBL operates by accounts,
rather than username/password pairs. Some accounts
have passwords, but most do not. The user name is
non-critical, and is used strictly for
informational purposes.
2) LBL does not support mail service, and any
attempts at mail will receive a fatal '506 Command
not Implemented' response.
3) Direct read access is now possible to LBL's main
file storage system (PSS), with full read/write
access to common/public files.
4) RJE to the 7600 is available via the SITE CLAIM
and SITE SUBMIT commands. See the documentation
for further information [5].
5) Documentation is available online (pathname is
ARPAHELP/WRITEUP). Remember though, you must be
logged in to perform any file operations [1].
6) Please report any problems/suggestions/comments to

Here is a release from NOSC (formerly NELC) describing
the new organization and outlining the host name changes:
"The consolidation of the Naval Electronics Laboratory Center
(NELC) and the Naval Undersea Center (NUC) to form the new Naval Ocean
Systems Center (NOSC) was announced on Feburary 22, 1977. Captain
Robert R. Gavazzi, Commander of NELC, was named as the Commander of
NOSC, and Dr. Howard L. Blood, the Technical Director of NUC, was
named as the Technical Director of NOSC. The new Center's mission is to
be the "Navy's principal research, development, test and evaluation
Center for command control, communications, ocean surveillance, undersea
weapons systems, and supporting technologies." The consolidation of
NELC and NUC, which has been under study within the Navy Department for
more than a year, recognizes the importance of combining the
complementary missions and resources of the two Centers to accomplish
this important new mission in support of the Navy's primary sea control
responsibilities."
Because of the reorganization, the Host names of the NELC and NUC
hosts are being changed. Please update your respective host tables to
reflect the changes indicated below. NELC-TIP and NUC-IMP are also
being renamed NOSC-TIP and NOSC-IMP, respectivly. In general, the old
names are being retained as aliases to ease the transition; exceptions
are those hosts that are (or will be) on the secure sub-net, where
unclassified access is not permitted. Hosts 1/3 and 1/35, remote lines
to NWC and LOGICON, respectivly, are unchanged by this renaming.
These changes are effective immediately.

<netinfo>computer-pathways and can be FTPd to your own host.
I would appreciate receiving comments, corrections, etc., concerning
this file.

Please make note that on Monday, March 14th at 0000-Pst, the SRI-AI host
which currently occupies address 66. Dec, 102 Octal (Port 1 on the SRI 516
IMP), will be exchanged with the SRI-KL host which currently occupies
address 51. Dec, 063 Octal (Port 0 on the SRI 316 IMP); at which time the
SRI-AI host will be renamed to SRI-KA.
Hence, after Monday you should have hostname SRI-KA on 063 oct, 51 dec. &
hostname SRI-KL, nicknames SRI & SRI-AI on 102 oct, 66. dec in your respective
system hosttables.
Mail fowarding will be implemented on both machines, such that a message sent

I. HOST CHANGES AND A PLEA
There seems to be a pandemic of hosts being changed lately without
any prior announcement to other hosts or to the NIC. If a SERVER
host address or name is changed without prior announcement, it causes
confusion for everyone. PLEASE let me urge all of you to ask
personnel at your site to give the network and the NIC prior
notification before hosts are switched. This courtesy will be
greatly appreciated by fellow networkers, especially those trying to
keep up with mail and mailers.
The NIC would also like to receive a list of those individuals whose
network mailboxes are affected by host switches so that we can keep
the Identification data base current.
Having given you the soap-box pitch....here is my best effort at
bringing you up to date on the recent changes to the host names and
host addresses. Please let me know of any errors or additions.
Again, if any of you are adding new hosts, removing old ones, or
changing the position of hosts, I would appreciate hearing of the
changes.

II. ARPANET DIRECTORIES
The Directories have been mailed, so you should be receiving them any
day (week? month??)...they are in the hands of the U.S. Post Office.
We are again asking the Liaison to pass along the individual
directories to the person whose name is printed on the label on the
back of each directory. This saves considerable time and postage.
This year the Arpanet Directory will also be deposited at the
National Technical Information Center (NTIS), Springfield, Virginia
22161. Extra copies may be purchased from there. (The NIC will
announce the AD Ordering Number as soon as it is available.) Also,
you will note that we have added a Network Addresses section and an
Associate Acronyms section...hope you will find them useful.
III. PROTOCOL HANDBOOKS
DCA has decided that the NIC should no longer charge for the Protocol
Handbook. In the future a copy will be sent to each Liaison as a
reference for his respective hosts, with additional copies available
from DDC or NTIS (current ordering number = AD A027964). We still
have copies of the Protocol Handbook available, which we will
distribute (until the supply is exhausted) to Arpanet users having a
definite need.
Requests should be sent online to FEINLER@OFFICE-1 and should
outline briefly the work for which the book is needed.
IV. THREE NEW REFERENCE FILES ARE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
Three new reference files are now available to NIC users. They may
be FTPd from OFFICE-1 (dec 43) by the pathnames given below
<NETINFO>NET-SPONSORS.TXT
A sequential file containing the names, addresses and phone
number of the Network Sponsors.
<NETINFO>NET-SPONSORS-SNDMSG.TXT
A sequential file containing the network mailboxes of the
Network Sponsors (suitable for TENEX mail distribution). To
distribute a message to all sponsors with network mailboxes,
insert a copy of this file in the 'TO:' field of the message.
<NETINFO>NET-SPONSORS-MEETING-5/76
This file contains the minutes of the last Network Sponsors
Meeting held at DCA in May 1976. The minutes of future
Sponsors Meetings will be added as they are received from DCA.
NOTE: The next Sponsors Meeting will be held Nov 1976.
V. AROUND THE NET...
- Both BBN and ISI have added PDP-10 KL machines...can someone fill
us in on which ports have the KLs?
- RAND-UNIX is now a PDP-11/70
- NBS wll be adding a PDP-11 running UNIX sometime soon
- The Univ of Texas will bring up a PDP-10 (KI) in Feb or Mar 77.
- Another SIMP is being added in Sweden.
- SU-AI has their PDP-10 (KL) up now
- SRI-AI will add a PDP-10 (KL) in Feb 77
- EGLIN now has a PDP-11/40 on the net running RSX-11. They will
soon be connecting a CDC-6600 to the 11.

The following significant changes have recently been made, or are
scheduled to be made in the near future, to the ARPANET. In addition
to the changes listed, a number of Host interfaces have been added
or moved within the past few months.
1) As previously noted in a message from Jake Feinler at the NIC, the
Lincoln Labs VDH formerly connected to the CCA IMP has been moved
to the MIT-TIP.
2) On 1 September an IMP was installed at the Digital Equipment
Corporation in Marlboro, Mass. This IMP is numbered 37 (decimal),
and replaces the previous VDH connection of DEC to the Harvard IMP
(IMP #9).
3) In the near future Logicon Inc. of San Diego, Calif. is scheduled
to become a VDH connected as Host 1 (numbering 0 thru 3) on the
NELC TIP (IMP #35 decimal).
4) During October IMP #62 will be installed at the University of Texas
in Austin, Texas.
5) During late September the SDC IMP (IMP #8) and the Purdue IMP (IMP
#38) will be removed from the network.
6) During early October an IMP will be substituted for the TIP at ISI,
the TIP will be substituted for the IMP at Rand, and the IMP at Rand
will be removed. Thus, at the end of this procedure, ISI will have
two IMPs and no TIP while Rand will have a TIP but no IMP. None
of the existing Host addresses will be changed by this move except
the address of the TIP itself, which will change from 180 to 135
(decimal).

This message is an update to my last note on this subject, which was
sent to the Liaisons on 12 January. This note supercedes items 9-11
(the "predictive" items) of that note.
1) Host interface #1 was added at Moffett (IMP #45)
2) IMP #3 was installed in the network at the Naval Underseas Center
(NUC) in San Diego in January.
3) The University of Rochester will be added to the network as a VDH
(Host address 1) off the Rome TIP (TIP #18) in the near future.
4) ADR will be removed from its VDH connection to the Rutgers TIP
(TIP #46) in the near future [it may have already happened]. Shortly
thereafter Massachusetts Computer Associates will be added to the
network as a VDH (Host address 1) off the Rutgers TIP.
5) A computer at the Naval Electronics Laboratory Center (NELC) will
be attached as a VDH (Host address 2) off the NUC IMP (IMP #3) in
the very near future.
6) The FNWC TIP (TIP #33) will be removed from the network in mid-April
and an IMP substituted for it. FNWC will retain network address 33.
The TIP will be shipped to NELC (see next item).
[Those of you around in October 1972 may recall that the FNWC TIP
was first installed in the network at the ICCC in Washington for
the public demo of the Network.]
7) In mid-April a TIP will be added to the network at the Naval
Electronics Laboratory Center (NELC) in San Diego. The TIP will be
assigned network address 35. It will have one Host interface (Host
address 0).
8) In early May Digital Equipment Corporation will be added to the
network as a VDH (Host address 2) off the Harvard IMP (IMP #9).
9) In June the Naval Coastal Systems Lab in Panama City Florida will
be added to the network as a VDH (Host address 1) off the Eglin IMP
(IMP #53).
10) In early July IMP #37 will be installed at the Naval Telecommuni-
cations System Integration Center (NTSIC) near Washington DC. This
IMP will have 3 Host interfaces.
11) In early July the University of Hawaii TIP (TIP #36) will be moved
to Camp Smith on Oahu. A VDH capability (Host address 1) will be added
and some University of Hawaii computer will be connected to this
interface.

By now most of you should have received your Resource Handbooks. I have
had some people tell me that the rules for obtaining a copy sounded so
formidable that they thought only very official persons such as project
leaders, managers, etc., would be sent a copy on request. I want to
emphasize that this is NOT the case. The Resource Handbook and the
Arpanet Directory are for ALL Arpanet users performing any kind of
reasonable network research or business. I do need some information
such as an ARPA order number, project name, or some description of what
a requestor is doing on the net along with complete identification
(name, host affiliation, network mailbox address, organization) in order
to verify that the person making the request is a valid user. I hope
you will make this clear to your users for me, as you are the main link
between the NIC and users of your respective hosts. The NIC will
distribute the books first come first serve until they run out.

During the past few months, and continuing through the next several,
various ARPANET IMPs and TIPs have been undergoing relocations.
This note is an attempt to bring everyone up to date about these
changes.
1) In August the SDAC TIP was moved to the Pentagon
2) In September IMP #59 was installed at Scott Air Force Base
3) In September three machines in the Boston area were shuffled:
-The 516 IMP installed at Harvard was moved to CCA
-The TIP installed at CCA was moved to MIT
-The 316 IMP at MIT was moved to Harvard
The site locations retained their existing networkaddresses, i.e.,
Harvard is still IMP #9, CCA is still IMP #31, and MIT-IPC (now called
MIT-TIP) is still IMP #44.
4) In November the UCSB IMP (#3) was removed from the network
5) In November the ETAC TIP was removed from the network and
re-installed at the Defense Communications Engineering Center (DCEC)
6) In December the sdac IMP was removed from the Network and a
Pluribus IMP was installed in its place.
7) At the end of December the UCSD IMP was removed from the network
8) At the beginning of January the RML TIP was removed from the
network and re-installed at Gunter in place of the Gunter IMP (which
was simultaneously removed from the network)
9) In mid-January IMP #3 will be installed in the Network at the
Naval Underseas Center (NUC) in San Diego.
10) In March IMP #35 will be installed at Camp Smith in Hawaii
11) In March it is rumored that a TIP will be installed at the
Naval Electronics Laboratory Center (NELC) in San Diego. If this

The following is an excerpt from a note from Ken Pogran describing the
addition of the new MIT-TIP and the KL-10 host, MIT-MC:
Regarding the effect of the swap on host numbers at MIT: The
swap was very carefully engineered to NOT result in any changes
to the addresses of already-existing hosts at MIT. IMP 6 remains
exactly as it was. In particular, to answer one of your
questions, the host number of MIT-DEVMULTICS (6) does not change.
The machine which was formerly IMP 44 (decimal) was moved to
Harvard and re-numbered. The machine which was formerly the
CCA-TIP was moved to MIT and re-numbered to 44 (decimal). The
MIT-MULTICS system is connected as Host 0 to this machine, so the
Host address of MIT-MULTICS remains 44 (decimal).
The swap results in the creation of two new hosts at MIT: The
MIT-TIP is Host 172 (decimal, 254 octal). It REPLACES the
CCA-TIP host (159 decimal, 237 octal) which no longer exists
since the machine at CCA is now an IMP instead of a TIP. For the
time being at least, I will be Liaison for the MIT-TIP.
Also, the newly-arrived KL-10 will be connected to the MIT-TIP as
host 108 (decimal; 154 octal) sometime this fall. Its official
hostname will be MIT-MC (stands for MACSYMA Consortium, to which
the machine belongs). This machine should be listed as a Server.
I will supply you with a Liaison name, etc. in the near future.
As is evident from the above, the KL-10 is an addition, and does
not replace the MIT-ML KA-10 host here.
This should answer all of your questions (I hope). If you need
more info or have questions, I'll be glad to help.

The ETAC IMP has not been "moved" to Scott AFB as it did not exist
before. A new IMP has been shipped there to which the old host
ETAC (a PDP-11) will be attached...the new IMP is IMP 59 and the
ETAC host will have the new hostaddress of 59 dec, 73 oct.
I understand that the ETAC-TIP will probably be moved
to DCA (Defense Communications Agency) on or about Nov. 15 although I
have not had official confirmation on this from DCA.
Will keep you posted.

- SDAC-TIP (154 dec) has been moved to the Pentagon and its name is
now PENTAGON-TIP with same host number.
- The ETAC Imp has been moved to Scott AFB, Illinois with no name
or host address change
- SU-DSL is now host 170 (oct), 120 (dec) attached as a VDH to the
SUMEX Imp. It is running the internet TCP protocol with ELF
as well as running a standard ELF with an FTP server.
- The CCA-TIP has been moved to MIT and there is a great rearrangement
of hosts among the IMPs and TIP. As yet I do not know how
this will affect host names and addresses for MIT hosts. Hope
Ken Pogran (or whoever is involved) will let us know what
the final outcome is on these moves.

using pathname <Netinfo>hosts.txt. There have been changes in Liaison
and Liaison network mailbox addresses. Please tell any users who might

On 8/22/75 Host 129 (dec), 201 (oct), UCLA-CCBS was removed
from the Network. PARC-VTS was replaced by PARC-GATEWAY,
a Nova 800 which is being used as a vehicle for new inter-network
protocols being developed at the Xerox Palo Alto
Research Center (PARC). Host address is the same for this machine
as it was for the VTS, namely 96 (dec), 140 (oct) with nickname PORTOLA.
You will want to make these changes in your host name tables.
Many changes will be taking place on the network in the near furture
and these are not always easy to track down. Please notify the NIC
if you know of host additions, deletions, or changes.
J. Shores (NAVMINI@OFFICE-1) would like to know if there is a copy
of SIMULA-67 anywhere on the network. He thought work had originally
been done on this at Trondheim in Norway so perhaps our Norwegian
contingent may be able to help. If anyone has information on this
program, please contact Shores with copy to me.

mail so should be arriving soon. We have sent them as a single bundle
to each separate facility. Generally they were addressed to the Liaison.

This note is an attempt to bring everyone up to date about recent
and near-future changes.
First, some corrections of previous announcements:
The SU-DSL Host (decimal address 75) was scheduled to be moved to a
VDH connection to the SUMEX IMP (new address 120) on 1 July. This move
has been postponed to about 1 August.
The Univac VDH (address 140) was scheduled to be permanently removed
on 1 July. This event has been postponed until 1 October.
The IMP at UCSD (number 35) was scheduled for removal from the
network on 1 July. This event has been postponed until 1 November,
and may be postponed again.
The NSA IMP (number 57) is now functioning on the network.
Now some new items:
Within the next few weeks Host interface #0 will be added to the
TIP at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (number 47)
Early in August Host interface #3 will be added to the TIP at ARPA
(number 28).
In mid-August the TIP at SDAC (number 26) will be moved to the
Pentagon.
In early September the Culler-Harrison VDH will be moved from its
current attachment to the UCSB IMP (address 131) to SCRL (new
address 182).
In early September the IMP at MIT-IPC (number 44) and the TIP at CCA
(number 31) will be "swapped". It has not yet been decided whether
we will move the existing numbers with the machines they are now
assigned to (which would leave the TIP address the same but change
all the Host addresses) or leave the IMP address assigned to the
sites (which would leave all the Host addresses unchanged but change
the TIP address).
In early September a new IMP (number 59) will be installed at
Scott Air Force Base. This IMP will have one Host interface (address
59).
OIn early October the ETAC TIP (number 20) will be removed from
the network. It will be re-installed at the Defense Communications
Agency in late October.
In mid-November the University of Rochester will be added as a VDH
to the TIP at Rome (address 82).

Just a short note to bring people up to date about pending network

On about July 1 the SU-DSL Host (present decimal Host address 75) will
become a Very Distant Host connected to the SUMEX IMP (#56) and will
have Host address 120.
On about July 1 the Univac VDH connected to the Illinois IMP (present
decimal address 140) will disappear from the network "forever".
On about July 1 IMP #57 will be installed at Meade. This IMP will have
one Host interface (decimal address 57).

This note lists several corrections and additions to Appendix A of
BBN Report No. 1822. Report 1822 was updated in December 1974;
all sites should have received a copy of the update by now, so please
let me know if your site did not.
All numbers are decimal. The four possible Hosts which may be
connected to an IMP are numbered 0,1,2,3.
Several additions and changes will occur in mid-January as follows:
-IMP #54 will be installed at SCRL. IMP 54 will include a local Host
interface 0, and a VDH interface 1. A PDP-11 will be added as Host 0.
The current Host at SCRL, which is currently attached to the UCSB
IMP (#3) will instead be attached to IMP 54 as a VDH; its address
will thus change from 67 to 118.
-Host interface 0 at GWC (IMP 24) will be removed.
-Host interface 3 will be installed at Norway (IMP 41).
The Gunter IMP will be installed in early February. Its IMP number
will be 13.
IMP #55 will be installed at Argonne National Laboratory (near Chicago)
in mid-February. It will include Host interface 0.
IMP #56 will be installed at New York University in late February.
It will include Host interface 0.
The following interface installations have been ordered by ARPA, but
are not yet scheduled for a definite time:
-Host interfaces 1 and 2 will be added to the SRI 316 IMP (IMP 51).
-Host interface 1 will be added at Moffett (IMP 45).
-Host interface 0 will be added at Rutgers (TIP 46).
-Applied Data Research will be added as a VDH to the Rutgers TIP as
Host 1. The network address of ADR will be 110.

In response to many and varied recent questions about the Hosts
connected to the IMPs and TIPs at BBN I have produced the
following note. This is intended as a public service; please don't
complain to me that the game of musical Hosts played by Division 5
should have been announced earlier since I tried to get this to happen.
IMPs/TIPs under Control of Division 6 (IMP Group)
-------------------------------------------------
TIP 30 - This is used for software checkout of new IMP and TIP software.
Normally, it has no Hosts connected to it. It is equipped
with two local Host and two modem interfaces, however, so
as testing requires it may have up to two local Hosts
(addresses 0 and 3) and one VDH (address 1) connected to
it. These "Hosts" are generally simulated using other
H316's, although other arrangements are possible.
TIP 40 - This machine has two local Hosts; the NCC machine (H316)
at address 0, and a PDP-1d at address 3.
Other IMPs - Any IMP not "officially" part of the Network, currently
IMP 13 and any IMP with number greater than 52, may be conn-
ected to the Network at BBN for test purposes. Host interfaces
may be undergoing testing, and therefore there may appear to
be Hosts connected to any such IMP. These Hosts may
include TIPs.
IMPs Owned by ARPA under control of Division 5 (TENEX Group)

IMP 5 - This machine has 1 distant interface (currently being operated
with the distant driver disconnected, I believe) at address
0, and 3 local interfaces at addresses 1-3
IMP 50 - This machine has 2 local interfaces at addresses 0 and 1.

configuration of their Host/IMP connections starting December 18.
